What is Shibari?

Shibari, also known as kinbaku, is a Japanese bondage technique that involves tying a partner with a series of knots that form an intricate, visually appealing pattern on the body. The person who ties the knots (known as the “rigger”) works with the bondage partner to combine rope patterns and the human body to create erotic art. Equal parts of sexual bondage and beautiful artwork, shibari has recently seen a surge in popularity as more and more people learn about rope play and incorporate it into their erotic activities.shibari the japanese bondage

Safety During Rope Play

When selecting a rope, please be sure to choose one that is designed for bondage and suspension. As a rope that is too narrow or constructed of the wrong materials can inflict pain on your partner and possibly cause damage to the skin or nerves. Beginner rope artists should not attempt any suspended ties that lift their partner above the ground, as this can be quite dangerous for those who are inexperienced in rope play. Most importantly, whether you are tying or being tied, be sure to check in with your partner frequently to make sure that both of you are safe and comfortable during the entire session.shibari the japanese bondage

Rope Bondage and Tying

A large part of the appeal of shibari for the practitioners is the pleasurable sensory effect of the rope on the skin, as well as the restraining effect of the ties. To amplify this effect for the bondage partner, ropes are created in a variety of lengths and textures that can facilitate different knot patterns and different sensory experiences. Shibari rope is also available in a wide variety of colors, which adds to the impressive visual effect. Many of the more complex shibari patterns can involve multiple ropes in different colors, which creates a beautiful interwoven artwork on the partner’s body. Advanced practitioners may also create ties that suspend their partner above the ground, further enhancing the dramatic, elegant figures created with the partner in bondage.
